Home Up Walking Waymarking List of Walks

These are some of the walks we have enjoyed over the past few years. All of them are well within the capabilities of hillwalkers of average ability - for those who might wish to stretch themselves further, the mountains of the Ecrins and the Queyras lie only a couple of hours away by car. Bring a picnic with you and enjoy the views.

Bramefan Bramefan lies above the village of Clamensane, about a 20 minute drive away from La Toupine. The walk is short but steep, making it ideal if you are limited by time or the weather. A waymarked petit sentier leads you to the 1658m summit.

Baume1.jpg (15080 bytes) La Baume dominates the skyline over the town of Sisteron. The short but steep walk follows the GR6 route and a petit sentier to a cave which lies just a few metres of the mountain's 1147m summit.

Bigue4.jpg (23836 bytes) La Bigue lies at 1653m between Digne and Thoard. This walk follows the GR6 on tracks and paths on a 700m climb from Thoard. Much of the walk climbs gently although there are some steep sections.

Standing high above the village of La Motte Du Caire lies the rocky outcrop of Les Chanderettes (1550m). The route described starts from the tiny village of le Caire, a few kilometres to the north, and follows forest tracks footpaths, with one very steep section.

Clapouse2.jpg (29034 bytes) This is a fairly easy walk to the col de Clapouse, a pass that lies  between les Monges and la Laupie in the hills to the east of Valernes. The total height gained is about 300m.

The chapel de Saint Michel lies just below the 1510m summit of Le Cousson, just to the south of the town of Digne. This walks starts from the edge of the town and follows  wooded paths and tracks with one vertiginous section at the Pas de Boudillon.

Gache You can see the the 1356m summit of the Gache from the terrace of La Toupine, so why not try to to climb it? You have a choice of two routes, one requiring the car and the other walkable from La Toupine itself.

Guillaume A superb walk that is worth the longish drive to get there. The summit of Guillaume lies at an altitude of 2623m and overlooks the lac de Serre-Poncon.

Melan

Melan is reached by taking an impressive drive along the D3 road from Sisteron, via Authon, to the parking area at the col de Fontbelle (1304m). A series of footpaths (mostly well-marked) take you up to the 1728m summit.

Les Monges Three walks are described here. You can reach the Les Monges either from the west by taking the D3 road from Sisteron to Authon, or from the north by taking the D951/D1 and a minor road to Esparron la Batie. Each walk uses paths passing through trees, over narrow vertiginous arretes and across wide-open spaces to reach the double 2111m summits.

Route de la Pinee La Route de la Pinee is a moderate walk which finishes at the lac des Monges, a small lake surrounded by woodland with nearby views of the Reynier valley.

Foret du Vanson Le Foret du Vanson is an easy walk which lies just to the south of the Gache. It reaches an altitude of 1212 metres and the crete can be followed up to 1348 metres.
