Le Foret du Vanson
lies just to the south of the Gache and offers views towards the Vaumuse
and the Durance valley to the south. This is an easy, short walk up
forest tracks, rising by only 150 metres from the road. |
 |
 |
Drive from La
Toupine towards Sisteron, taking the D951 which crosses the Sasse
torrent just outside Valernes. Before reaching the river bridge in
Sisteron, take the D3 road on the east of the town, following the
signs for the village of Authon. As you drive up behind the Gache,
you will see a sign 'Pierre Ecrite' on your left, pointing out a Roman inscription engraved into the rock. After
another kilometer or so on this road you will find a large
boulder on the left. Park near the next forest track you reach
on your right. |
 |
Follow the track as it
climbs and meanders towards the south-west. Eventually you will
reach an electricity pylon which marks the southern edge of the
crete. |
 | If you
wish to extend the walk, continue towards the east by following a sketchy
path which runs along the edge of the crete. It is possible to
continue the walk all around the edge of the crete to its north-east
corner, although the going at times will be difficult. A scramble
down the hillside towards the house Chardavon will get you
back to the main road. Alternatively, retrace your steps back to the
pylon and follow the forest track as it continues downhill towards
the north-east.
