Valernes
is a small village perched on the south side of hill overlooking the
valley of the River Sasse, about 10 km from the town of Sisteron. Despite
the population of the village and surrounding farms totalling less than
200, normal provençale village life continues, albeit at a much more
relaxed pace than you might be used to.

The
view on the right is taken from the little road which runs from Valernes to the foot
l'Hongrie, a little hill which lies to the east of the village. As you can
see, Haute Provence is worth visiting at any time of the year. During
December, for example, we expect the weather to be cold, dry and sunny,
ideal walking weather. An easy walk from the house is up to the summit of
l'Hongrie, which you could expect to take about 2 hours (or 4 hours for
the round trip).

Across the valley lies
the steep and distinctive escarpment of
the
Gache, well-known to the glider
pilots of the southern Alps.
Occasionally during the summer a
village fete will be held, attracting people from the other local villages.
Everyone, of course, is invited. Sometimes a band will play in the village
square, sometimes you will see the start of a mountain bike race around the
local hills. Perhaps there will be a wedding in the village - you will be
invited to share a glass. Sundays are days for leisure and you may just find a
game of boules blocking the road back to the house. This is Provence - the game
must not be interrupted!
