Walkers
who are used to the crowded honeypots of England, such as
the Lake District, the Peaks and the Yorkshire Dales, will be pleasantly
surprised not only by the quality of the walking to be had in this area but also
by the marked absence of others doing the same. It is not at all unusual to
spend all day on the hills and not meet another soul - those seeking solitude in
the hills will not be disappointed.
France is fortunate in having an extensive network of
waymarked paths
which allow visitors new to the area to enjoy the mountains with little fear of
getting lost. Of course, walkers must always be aware of their limitations and
of the need to get down from the mountains before nightfall but this is normal
common-sense and applies to anywhere one chooses to walk, not just Haute
Provence.
Walking maps may be
obtained in at least two bookshops in Sisteron and in the Intermarché at Peipin.
The best and most useful
1:50,000 scale maps are those produced by Editions
Didier-Richard. The local map is Number 28 (Haute
Provence; Lure - Val de Durance - Buech) and shows all the available footpaths
in the area. More detailed 1:25,000 scale maps are available from the IGN
- sheets 3339ET, 3339OT, 3340ET and 3341OT cover the local area.
