La Baume is a
small mountain that overlooks the town of Sisteron. The distinctive
rock formations attract rock-climbers from all over France. This walk
will take you up to a small cave, called the Trou d'Argent, near the top
of the mountain. The walk is short but the 600m climb has some steep
stretches.
Drive from La
Toupine on the D951 towards Sisteron. Park at the small hamlet
of la Baume, just before crossing
the river bridge which leads into Sisteron itself. The lower flanks
of the mountain consist of immense vertical sheets of rock which are
very popular with climbers. Our path is just as strenuous but
generates less adrenalin.
The path to the Trou
d'Argent begins as the GR6 long-distance footpath, and a sign marked
with red and white waymarks
points the way just south of the bridge. A moderate climb through
trees reveals views of Sisteron
town below and the valley of the Durance stretching away to the
south. Watch out for a yellow petit sentier waymark which
bears left off the main path. The path then climbs steeply until it
meets sheets of rock near the top of la Baume. The Trou d'Argent
itself is reached with the aid of a steel cable.
To return, retrace your
steps. If, when you reach the GR6 again, you decide to carry on to
Entrepierres, be warned that during our last visit there in June
2000, the official path had been diverted and may no longer be
available on the south side of la Baume.
