La Route de la Pinee
starts in the village of Esparron la Batie, below the northern arm of
les Monges. It is a major track which passes through woodland along the
edge of a crete with frequent views of the valley below. The walk
finishes at the lac des Monges, a small lake surrounded by trees and in
the shelter of the summit of les Monges.
Take the D951 towards la Motte
du Caire and, before reaching the village, turn right along the D1
past Clamensane as far as le Forest Lacour. Turn right and follow an
unclassified road as far as Esparron la Batie. Park outside the
village.
Note that in the winter this
road may be closed to traffic. It is possible to walk up to Esparron
by using a path from Bayons, or by walking up the road from le
Forest Lacour. Either choice will add considerably to the time
required for this walk.
The path is waymarked with
red and white flashes and is very easy to follow. It leads through
the village and climbs slowly through the trees up to the edge of
the ridge which overlooks the Reynier valley. There are occasional
steep climbs but they are quite short in duration. Eventually you
will reach the lac des Monges which has its own refuge - this is
unmanned and is intended to provide shelter only - so bring your own
picnic!
To return, either retrace your steps or
follow the forest track sets off form the nearby car-park. Note that
the road up to this car-park is closed from September-June
inclusive.
