Despite the excellent visibility this morning, compared with the haze of previous days, we were not actually in a new airmass and storms were forecast for the northern and eastern Alps. Ariane and John set off under a cloudbase of 9500ft in the valley. They pair-flew towards the pic de Bure and then on to the valley of Orcierre-Merlette to cross into the St Crepin valley via the pas de la Cavale.

Cloudbase around Briancon was about 13,500ft with a peak climb rate of 10.5 knots near the tête d'Amont. Ariane turned back at the village of Plampinet while John carried on to the Sollieres valley to turn the lac Cenis.

Reports were heard of a storm brewing in the Sisteron valley so, despite the excellent conditions over the Queyras, John decided to head for home. Soarable conditions persisted as far as the tête de Lucy but further south the way looked as black as a very black thing. The glide back to base was far less dramatic than expected as the storm had just about blown itself out.
