Encore les Alpes

For my first flight of the holiday I headed northwards to some local mountains in order to refamiliarise myself with the local topography, thermal hotspots and outlanding options. After a couple of months of British thermals I felt in dire need of recalibration against the tight and powerful thermals of the Alps.

Looking into Italy from the eastern Queyras

The weather was hot and sunny, with a southerly mountain breeze that made all the slopes work as advertised. Cloudbase was over 12,500ft and the flight area took in Mont Viso to the east of the Queyras, the Roche Bernaud on the edge of the Maurienne and the pic de Bure.

Today's flight distance was about 370km, after which I felt confident enough to look forward to some more adventurous flying in the days to come.
